TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: **; 55ish; some color; full moon tides, windy sob.
I must have pissed the weather gods off because low water ran me off the Susquehanna a few days early BUT on the way home it rained ALL day raising the river from 4 feet to 11.That’s OK because it’s May with a full moon and the Potomac is exactly where I want to be under those circumstances.
Enters angler’s biggest deterrent—WIND. Col wind, for several days and I lost Monday thru Wednesday.
Tidal bass had spawned last month just about the time we were catching 110 fish a day. Right now it’s tough sledding and I’ve been to DC, Belle Havn, Fort Washington and Mattawoman.
This happens every year—but rarely in May. Look for bass in summer-like patterns for now and either entice them—or anger them. I’m like all the areas I listed above so go get ‘em guys.
SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVER, PA: ***; 7’ at Newport and falling; good color; 55 degrees;
The recent rise to 11-feet on the main stem came at a very inopportune time as many of the smallmouth bass had spawned—but the river didn’t go crazy so perhaps mitigation prevails.
Post spawn smallmouth are not as persnickety as largemouth but they do get lethargic and move a bunch. They are is full-scale feed time now so spinnerbaits, cranklbaits, Case Magic Swims and Magic Stiks are all solid choices. They was some current so leave the eddies alone.
I’m reporting on the Duncannon and vicinity sectors so remember—there is a bunch more Susquehanna River than this.
