The bass fishing world lost a mighty-one this week as Ray Scott moved on to newer challenges. Ray was MR. BASS and ANYONE AND EVERYONE ASSOCIATED WITH BASS FISHING OWES HIM A MONSTER THANK YOU.
TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: ***1/2; 62+; stained
An early-week nor’easter totally blew-out most rivers in the region and accompanying winds did the rest to keep us home several days this week. Flooding in the upper Potomac sent tons of debris and muddy water into the tidal sector making navigation hazardous and fishing difficult.
By Wednesday, I said “let’s go” to Dr Dave and in spite of very muddy water—we scorched them in the Belle Haven/I-95 Bridge vicinity. The good Doctor’s 19 ¾” bass is/was good enough to lead the LOU LoPo contest—and he caught another. Me too.
Friday was equally as good and Kirk Rolen scored two LoPos. You use what you want but my road to success is Case Magic Swims, Case Magic Stiks and Campground Special tubes in the KP Series attached to 1/8th ounce RAB jig heads by Johnny Cunningham. I’m getting pretty tired of telling you this.
Tributaries to the south, with hectic tournament activity, were stained and crowded but grass beds were still giving-up plenty of bass in Mattawoman, Occoquan, Chickamuxen and Belmont.
A Full Moon this weekend so count on more spawning activity.
UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: *; 60s; muddy; 5’ at Point of Rocks and rising to 5.9 by Tuesday
Blown-out most of the week.
SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS, PA: ***; 60s; some stain some places; 5.6 at the Harrisburg gauge and 6.5 on the Juniata at Newport with a jump to 7-feet expected by Tuesday.
Well, there is plenty of water to run those jet boats but perhaps too much for float trips and non-powered craft. The good news is that the main river bite is on and spinnerbaits and topwater are reliable producers. Johnny Cunningham sells the Big Mouth Spinnerbaits and vibrating jigs that we endorse. He is also the go-to man for the Campground tubes and RAB jig heads we use. He is located at 9 Newport Road, Duncannon, PA 17020 (717-877-2704)
