It’s Not Summer Boys, so don’t fish like it is.”
We are losing about a minute of daylight every day. Yep, dove and resident goose season is upon us and on Friday, Maryland archery season begins—but it’s still summer.

UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: **; <80; clear with algae; 1.3 at Point of Rocks rising a little to 2.5 by Thursday. I’ll get my postponed “Cast & Blast” trips in as soon as we get some water guys. Under 2-feet is just bumpy and restrictive but you can get some floats in as well as motorized adventures is you choose the right places and forget that run & gun stuff. Smallmouth bass fishing has improved but not like just 5 years ago. I like the drift from Brunswick to Lander but early morning is the truth—the rest is a test. You can also fish “down” a little and “up” a little more from Whites Ferry. Seneca “up” and Edwards “up” are OK too. When you can see every rock on the bottom, every living inhabitant can see you too—so stealth” is crucial. You can have the best equipment in the world but if you are noisy and splashy—you are a loser. Spool-up with 6-pound test Excel monofilament (to within 1/8th inch of the rim) and get a few Ardent medium action spinning rods and Bolt or C-Force reels. Fish current near calmed areas and present your offering so that they reach the fish from up current. Your trolling motor makes a lot of noise so don’t hesitate to drop an anchor and allow some noise-free time. Low water also creates competition between the fish so reaction bites are a good choice and I like Zora Spook; Obie Hard Hook buzzbaits; Rico poppers and frogs. Never, never fish warm water smallmouth waters without Case Magic Stiks and Case Magic Swims—and if you don’t have a good supply of Campground Tubes and 1/8th ounce RAB jig heads—shame on you. I can’t help you. TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: * to *** depending on lots of things; 80ish; lots of algae and sickly grass I took much of the summer off to retrofit our new home in Lusby, MD, and to make improvements to my lodge in Sinnemahoning, PA. I‘m taking books and reschedules as of now. Looks like a lot of people took the summer off also but for different reasons. I was at Slavins yesterday to deliver some guns and rods and there wasn’t a trailer in the parking lot. I have always like the District of Columbia water in the summer months and not just because it’s kinda of tournament-angler free. One of the Client Recognition awards we offer is called the “DC Slam” and the “DC GRAND SLAM.” The slam means you have caught a smallmouth, largemouth, catfish and rockfish on the same day. The Grand Slam is the same but must include either a walleye or a snakehead. On a high outgoing tide I’ll beat-feet for the rip rap from Anacostia to Bolling SFB and the rocks retaining the airport fill. Whopper Plopper in the AM—Case Magic Swim, Campground tubes, Big Mouth vibrating jigs and Zipper worms after. Looking for rockfish? Troll 6-8 foot crankbaits in the 1012 foot contour on the Washington Channel (Bomber 7-A; Rapala DT-6 Hot Mustard; Bandit in chartreuse on sexy shad. These lures work good on the bridge foundations but also do a drop-shot, white worms and grubs. To the south, I like Penrod Cove with Case Stiks; Smoot Bay points with Campground tubes; Belle Haven coves with grubs and Stiks and Hog Island with the Penrod spinnerbaits. Nearby Broad Creek barges, Ft Wahimngton Lighthouse and Green way Flats grass is a must. My best bet is Pomonkey Creek, Pohick Bay and Hallowing Cove creeks. The salt wedge is fairly high in the usually fresh-water Potomac but pretty strong Between Occoquan and Aquia Creek where vegetation is king—most of the time. Lots of snakehead opportunities here especially Mattawoman and Chickamuxen. Frogs and twisting, weightless, white worms do the deed. Just fish for largemouth—you will get your snake bites. I got out on the LOWER POTOMAC in the Piney Point area where we caught some rockfish and blues on plastic swim baits. <>
