HOT HOT: Lures of the Week
Don’t be in a rush to call conditions FALL just yet. Evening chill surface temps but warmer hours rebound that water. Start the day at or near drop-offs close to cover. Move closer as the sun does the job.
Rockfish are ganging up for their move toward deeper water and Bay. Play the birds.

TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: ** to ***; low 70s falling; much debris—be careful;
In Washington DC. The rockfish are ganged-up in the Washington Channel and humps on Main River. Look for smallmouth at bridge foundations and rip rap. Largemouth are still scattered but foundations, rip rap and drops are solid. If you use Gravely Point avoid GW Parkway toward the Beltway. It’s a mess with road construction.
The Wilson Bridge vicinity was pretty stingy but crankbaits will score on concrete in Penrod Cove; old barges near the bridge and drops in Smoot Bay. Belle Haven coves and points at Swan and Piscataway Creek are willing too.
Grass and spatterdock in Mattawoman and Chickamuxen are still holding bass and snakeheads—and the creek is full of blue catfish. Crankbait the drop-offs in the 6-MPH zone.
SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS: ***; some stain in some sectors; high 60s; 3.6 at Newport on the Juniata and 4.5 at Harrisburg slowly falling.
It’s really fall here and the bass know it. Feed them Big Mouth spinnerbaits and vibrating jigs but NEVER put those Campground tubes away.

UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: **1/2; some color; very low; mid 60s; 1.2 feet at Point of Rocks.
You have to be prudent if you are power boating because those rocks are hard. Smallmouth are very cooperative but don’t crowd your fishing areas. Long casts are best but floating grass can be a pain.
Suggest Whites Ferry and up; Seneca and up; Lander up or down and Brunswick down.
