Whew! Talk about hot. Yet the rivers still have enough water to float a boat and in certain areas—the fish cooperate. MD DNR has issued public notice icon that alerts anglers to dangerous temperatures that can and will kill over–exerted stripers that are returned to the water asap. Why not the same for black bass? I know, Bay bass are the money fish and black bass in Maryland is a stepchild. It’s Ok for tournament anglers to carry bass all day in a live well that recirculates or exchanges 80-degree water.
I’ll issue my own warnng: RED. Catch & release immediately. No live well heroes. Photos in 30 seconds. Fish stays in the water until camera and hero are [positioned and ready.
My truck goes in to the body shop for a week or more so I am postponing guide trips for a short time. Make-ups will be scheduled in September, October and November.

UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: ***; 80+; clear with algae in areas; bacteria count is high; 1.8 at Point of Rocks gauge but steady. That’s too low for long boat rides but good for floats and wading. If you have open wound ds on your body—stay out of the river.
You can always drive to one of the dam launches but I don’t trust water that doesn’t move. The Piedmont launch locations such as Seneca, Edwards Ferry, Whites Ferry Point of Rocks, Lander and Brunswick offer decent smallmouth action but you must be there early. WhopperPloppers at dawn and Case Magic Stiks, Campground tubes; and Case Magic Swims will help your cause-“cause they are proven.”
TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: *** for catfish; ** for bass; *** for snakeheads
Dog Days” are upon us and it’s just not fun for a while.
In WASHINGTON D C, I’ll suggest smallmouth action from the bridge foundations and adjacent humps.
In the WOODROW WILSON BRIDGE vicinity, fish the various barges near the bridge as well as those in Broad Creek and Hog Island. Major points such as Fox Ferry, South Point; Swann Creek and Piscataway Creek with crankbaits, Big Mouth Big Shaky and tubes.
In the MIDDLE POTOMAC, grass and spatterdock in Pomonkey Creek is reliable ion a falling tide. Pohick docks and submersed wood are good spots to cast Zipper Worms and weighted Magic Stiks.
To the SOUTH, Mattawoman, Chickamuxen and Aquia Creeks are hit or miss for bass but snakeheads need thinning. Frogs, flujkes and Big Mouth spinnerbaita for bass, Frogs for snakes.
SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS: ** in some areas, *** in others; 80s; clear with algae blooms; 3.1 at the Harrisburg Gauge; 3.6 on the Juniata at Newport.
I know of no other river with sharper, more destructive rock ledges—and they are waiting to get you right now. Choose your routes carefully and take no chances.
There’s plenty of bass to catch but early-risers get the prizes. Between Montgomery Ferry and Fort Hunter are some of the most treacherous ledge gardens but fish between them with Big Mouth spinnerbaits, plastic swim baits, Case Magic Stiks and topwater lures in the low light hours.
