SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS: ***1/2; 60 degrees; stained some areas east shore; 6.7 falling to 5.5 by Wednesday; 5.5 at Newport on the Juniata and steady
Another crazy weather week but the weekend was pretty nice. The river continues to provide plenty of water and most areas are running clear. Smallmouth bass of all sizes delight our clients including nine of them that qualified for the 20-Inch Club.
To qualify, a paying client must catch a smallmouth bass measuring 20-inches or more—or weighing 5 pounds. Ladies and <18 qualify with 18-inch.
Our numbers aren’t like the “good old days” but we are tallying 40-50 per trip and impressive as the larger bass are to our friends—I’m most happy to see the younger class numbers.
Everything you own will catch bass now but Campground Tubes, Case Magic Swims and jerkbaits are tops.
Our time is spent in the Juniata< Sherman and west-side main stem—all in the vicinity of our HQ, Riverfront Campground.
Captain Dave Kerrigan reports: Finally, a week where the weather was trending better each day. Although we did get rain here and there overall the conditions were great. While the main Susky was still not fishing well, the Juniata more than made up for it. We caught fish from the confluence on up to the ledges. Mid river ledges were the go to spots by weeks end. Water temps on Sunday nicked the 60 degree mark and the fish responded with a strong bite on suspending jerk baits! Soft plastics including the Penrod’s Series Campground Special Teaser Tubes with RAB 1/8 oz jig heads were steady producers. SIMMS rain gear was handy to have as the passing showers made for some damp days. My Lowrance electronics were handy to have as thick fog set in one day. We were able to follow “trails” on the screen to get to our fishing spot we had selected to start on. Nice to have confidence in knowing where you are and where you are going!! We caught many big fish this week with all the clients having big smiles for those special photo memories! Even Capt. Dave got in on the fun catching a five-pound chunk!! We see another spawn coming on fast with many fish showing very fat bellies. Warmer falling water in the next week should trigger a main river bite – even in the stained water on the east side!! Get those spinner baits out!
PS - On Sunday we were fishing at the confluence and watched a guy on “the wall” catch a 36”Musky – on a tube!!
UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: **1/2; 60ish; good color; 3.9 at Point of Rocks falling slowly.
A much improved river is pleasing anglers these days so get your Ardent gear, Campground tubes, Case Magic Swims and Magic Stiks—an go.
I prefer the Piedmont sectors that include Brunswick to Seneca.
TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: ***; mid 60s; good conditions.
I’ll return to the tidal Potomac in a week after completing 6-weeks of Susquehanna smallmouth action. I have a few days available for May.
From DC to Aquia the results are similar. Tie on a Big Mouth Spinnerbait or Big Shaky and cover the grass beds thoroughly. The Case Magic Stik , lipless lures and swim baits all have value.
