UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: *; <70; clear; 1.4 at Point of Rocks It’s REALLY low and bumpy and pretty much deserted of anglers and yakers but the water temperature has dipped substantially-which is the only good news I have for you. You can still drift but may have to get out of the boat is areas—and the water is cold. If you intend to fish here, go early and keep a low profile. Bass still have to eat and they love Case Magic Swims, Case Magic Stiks, 3” grubs, Whopper Ploppers and Campground Special Tubes. This river has meant so much to my service and family over the years and I hate that it’s come to such distress. Hell, even the resident geese are somewhere else. We need to lobby MD DNR to seek full time catch & release for next year. TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: **; <70; floating grass in the south but grassless in the tidal fresh. It’s TOUGH just about everywhere and to broaden my evidence I’ll use stats from a two-day, Smallmood S.P, 42 boat event (Fri & Sat) where nearly 50% of the teams did not weigh a single fish on Saturday. Last Week’s FLW was almost as dismal. To the south, there is/was probably as much grass, or more, than ever before yet vanishes to the north above Piscataway. There are some rockfish in the Washington Channel and a few smallmouth on bridge foundations. The rip rap below the Anacostia, as well as that on the airport side will give up a few bass and crankbaits and Case Magic Swims on a Johnny Cunningham swim-jig head. The WW Bridge area is as productive as any especially in Penrod Cove and Smoot Bay where Big Mouth Lure Company spinnerbaits and Case Magic Stiks do the deed From Greenway Flats to and including Pomonkey Creek, attack the vegetation with punch-baits, weightless worms and use a buzzbait at low light. Mattawoman Creek has been pounded and spatterdock and other vegetables are dying as water temps dipped into the low 60s.I like crankbaits on outside bends and Penrod Special spinnerbaits around grass/spatterdock after the sun climbs a bit. SUSQUEHANNA/JUNIATA RIVERS, PA: **; <60; clear and VERY low; 3.0 at the Harrisburg station and 3.3 in Newport on the Juniata. Riverfront Campground celebrates their 40th year in business this year and I can’t imagine the Susquehanna/Juniata vicinity without them. Ellie and Lee Cunningham spent much of their later-life developing the business—and fighting flood after flood. They are missed mightily. Corinne and Johnny picked up the reins after the passing of mom and dad and employed their own vision to carry on in Cunningham tradition. I consider the Campground as one of my homes. The Susquehanna drainage complex is vast and complicated but Pennsylvania is in serious drought status where some stations report near-negative flows. The river seems to have more catfish than anything but smallmouth bass are still cooperative if not abundant. Boating is treacherous especially for the unexperienced or prop-boats yet drifting is an option for sure—but remember, wading is not a good idea in this cold water.
