I’m tired of saying it and you are tired of living it—but our “weather sucks.” I can’t remember another May like this. Mag and I escaped Covid City and retreated to Sinnamahoning, PA and that was just another mistake. So many people with little or no reagard to the suggested “space” and “grouping” so no wonder the trout and turkey are scarce.
Water temperatures did reach the 60s and the New Moon prompted more spawning activity-both largemouth and smallmouth—and the rivers are all in good shape although crowded, especially the Susquehanna.
This report will be brief as most of us are away from our offices.
##
UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: Water temps near 60 degrees, clear and good levels for boating yet too cool for wading. Smallmouth bass are still scarce but if you remember to fish ledges and current breaks with Campground tubes, Case Stiks and Magic Swims you will catch some—and some good ones. Simply “casting to water” isn’t getting it done.
You may now fish with whomever but social distancing is still in play unless you are with family members or persons your live with.
TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: Good to excellent largemouth and crappie fishing but often you must explore, play the tides and choose habitat prudently. Milfoil is scarce but signs of hydrilla growth indicate that thick cover is but a month or so away.
From Washington DC to Aquai you should find spawning activities, both “pre” and “post” so don’t get locked into one pattern.
SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS: It’s not often that water levels are such that boating is “wide-open” and the reprieve the bass received by Wolfe’s “nonsense” closure simply moved the crowds smack-dab into prime spawn periods—and into spawn sites that resemble Pennsylvania’s opening day of trout season.
KP3 spent several days in the Riverfront Campground sector and he caught lots of “no-disease” bass including a few in the Ken Penrod 20-Inch Smallmouth Club range.
