RIVER INFO & LEVELS

You would think that after five days of rain, the rivers would be high and muddy but that’s not the case. Actually, very little evidence exists. This has been a nice week to fish (and hunt) with a few wind days—and higher than average tides due to the full moon—The HUNTERS MOON. If those chilly mornings don’t get your heart pumping, then you need a checkup.

TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER (Little Falls to Nanjemoy); I need to always clarify which portion of the tidal I am referring to because next year I will extend my range to include a portion of the lower Potomac.
I’m giving ** stars for smallmouth in DC; *** for largemouth in special areas; *** for catfish just about anywhere; *1/2 for rockfish to the south and **1/2 for snakeheads throughout.
In DC the trio-bass is willing and an LOU Slam awaits Smallmouth are eating crankbaits and Campground tubes above Key Bridge; railroad bridge foundations and rip rap anywhere. Actually, you can do OK on the largemouth too but expand into the Washington Channel dropoff, Kennedy Center dropoff; airport rip rap and old wharfs (unseen) along the Navy side. Start using a tube as your weight for a drop shot rig and a short piece of Case Pin Tail worm on a #1 hook. Blue Plains and Fox Ferry Point are “ready” when you are. Which crankbaits? Bomber 7A Firetiger, Rapala DT-6 Hot Mustard and KVD square bill for shallower water.
Penrod Cove and surround just gets better each day as bass seek stable water as the temps decline. Concrete, all the obvious concrete PLUS some you can see where old WW Bridge foundations were demolished (they missed a lot). Spend some time on the barges near the bridge and beat South Point up! Across the river, Hog Island barge bodies and rip rap a little further south is solid.
I’ll spend much of my time now in the deeper creeks (Mattawoman and Occoquan) to the south where baitfish migrate now and stay a while. Still, look at the main stem between Leesylvania and the fuel docks because large schools of young rockfish are located by bird-watching. Cast Case Magic Swim, Sugar Shad and Big Mouth’s Big Shaky.

SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS, PA (Susqy between Montgomery Ferry and Rockville Bridge and Juniata between Amity and confluence): ***; good levels but don’t be stupid;
Wear your Simms stuff for this adventure and I’m not referring to the lightweight stuff. It’s a different climate here than most of my readers endure. The rule is simple: “Wear it—you can always take it off.” Keep some chemical hand warmers (MyCoal) in your truck, bag or pockets because wearing gloves while fishing is like taking a splinter out with a catcher’s mitt on.
It’s like the “magic temperature,” when smallmouth forgive caution and bite like it’s the last meal. The water is clear so you must be stealthy but Big Mouth spinnerbaits, Big Shakeys, Case Magic Swims, DT-4 cranks and Zipper worms on an RAB jighead, wound back erratically, sometimes “burned,” is big-boy time. Your issue isn’t “will they bite?” It’s can you get through the packs of youngsters.
Just about every fisherman on the Susquehanna is a guide—or so it seems. Fertile water smiles on all but you be sure that your guide has Commercial Insurance, is drug free and sober. There is nothing wrong with asking for a Certificate of Insurance. The key question is: are you covered for major injury if he only has recreational coverage.
I am accepting reservations for next year for time frame-Mid March through April and Captain Dave Kerrigan is also but Dave will work into May. Returning clients have first refusal for dates booked last year. Let’s do it.
