RIVER INFO & LEVELS
Susquehanna @ Harrisburg: 3.8 slowly falling, clear, mid 60s
Juniata @ Newport: 3.7 and steady. Clear, mid 60s
Point of Rocks on Potomac: 1.6 and steady, under 70 degrees
Paw Paw: 3.7 feet steady, low 60s

TIDAL POTOMAC: *** for largemouth; *** for catfish; ** for rockfish; ** for snakeheads
The river is in good shape but for dead, floating grass in some tribs—and the chilling water has largemouth bass much more aggressive than when food is plentiful. This recent full moon caused some mighty tides, both ways, but moving water is way better than dormant flows. In the south you can see the gulls working striper schools and it’s a fun game to keep up and keep them on. I’m recommending Ardent Edge baitcasting rods, Summit reels and 12 pound test Excel mono to sling pearl Case Magic Swims, Big Mouth white Big Shakeys with a Case trailer; white flukes on an under-chin rig. If you are just bass fishing—keep one rod rigged like this just in case.
In DC, it’s game-on for all three bass. The Washington Channel, railroad bridge and Blue Plains has quality striped ones (Case Magic Swims); Navy-side rip rap and Airport rocks have smallmouth (Campground tubes, Big Mouth spinnerbaits, Case Magic Stiks) and Channel and Key Bridge holds Largemouth (Big Shakey, Penrod spinnerbait, tubes and Bomber firetiger crankbaits.
The I-95 Bridge sector is all about crankbaits for us. The Penrod concrete, Rosealee barges, Smoot Bay points and Hog Island are best but I believe you could circle Smoot Bay and be in bass all day. A 13 year old “Birthday Boy” had a banner outing on an otherwise tough day and boated two LOU Potomac River Largemouth Club honors, one of which was also the “LOU Fish of the Week” at 6 pounds, eleven ounces.
UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: *1/2; very clear, very low, very difficult boating.
The level is only 1.2 feet at Point of Rocks and the water has that “black” look to it as chilling temps kill off the algae. It’s tough here under these conditions but smallmouth will eat if you can get to them. Whites Ferry and Lander has enough water for you to “putt” around in.
SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS: both rivers are holding at about 3,7 at Newport and Harrisburg, which is low and bumpy but doable.
I’m guessing the water temp could get to the 50s this week and that really jump-starts the bass panic. Spinnerbaits, Case Stiks, Campground tubes and shallow-dive crankbaits do the deed.
