SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS: ***1/2; mid 50s; full moon; some color; &.2 at Harrisburg and 5.4 at Newport on the Juniata/
A great week with superb conditions the likes of which are foreign in March. Consider 55 degree water; 50-75 degree air; full moon; perfect color and level and damn few fishermen.
We had four entries onto the ken Penrod 20-Inch Smallmouth club this week. Dave Colvin had a 20 3/16 on Friday and “Amy,” Michael Day’s guest had THREE.
ALL WERE CAUGHT ON Ardent rods and reels with Campground Special teaser tubes in the KP Series. The better news is that we caught bass everywhere.
Interesting to note that bass preferred current over eddies and “rocks” were key to most fish. I also like the fact that we are catching lots of young fish which bodes well for our future.
We HQ at Riverfront Campground, where the Juniata and Susquehanna blend. The campground store is loaded with the tubes we use and the RAB jig heads I brag about.
Captain Kerrigan worked the main river and Juniata with equal results and he likes jerk baits and Case critters. By the way, you have to order some Case Magic Swim-swim baits and use a Campground swim jig (3/16) on 8 # Excel mono.
Remember, it’s always colder on the water so don’t let those 60-70 degree predictions fool you. I’m wearing Patagonia long underwear, Simms bibs and rain coat with Woolrich or Eddie Bauer down inside. I like Muck boots, fingerless gloves, My Coal hand warmers and Costa sun glasses.

TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: ***; high 50s; some color, some new vegetation
There are places on this river where largemouth bass are smokin’ Big Mouth vibrating jigs, Case Magic Stiks, Penrod Special spinnerbait and lipless crankbaits.
I really like Penrod Cove and Smoot Bay near the I-95 Bridge; Piscataway Creek bays; Belmont Bay; Bays on the river side of Smallwood State Park and Bays just inside Aquia Creek.
