Tidal Potomac River: ***1/2; 70 degrees; tidal clear
I’ve been bitchin’ a bunch about a lack of action caused by the early April spawn—but I’m done. It’s back. They are munching good.
I’m surprised somewhat by the early (April) spawn but I also remember a March when it happened big time. Little by little over the past two weeks our productivity has increased and this week we posted 12 LoPos (Potomac River Smallmouth Club) entries that included one man, three clubbers; one man, two clubbers and one woman, two clubbers. This “contest” is sponsored by Lowrance Electronics and Ardent Outdoors. To qualify a paid client must catch a tidal Potomac bass measuring 18 inches or better. The longest bass of the year wins a Lowrance Elite 7” sonar/GPS unit. Other qualifiers get a “draw” to win an Arent rod and reel must like Ken Uses. Last year Dr Dave was the overall winner.
See my Hot Hot Hot above for favored luires and you are silly for not getting a bunch of those Case Magic Stiks (www.fishingcompleteinmc.com) and feel free to use my discount: KenP20
I Texas rig the Stik on a 3/0 worm hook (no weight), tie it on 8 pound test, green Excel monofilament (Bass Pro) spooled on an Ardent C-Force spinning reel and attached to an Ardent spinning rod. Be patient, be slow and keep your line “taunt.”
From Washington DC to Aquia Creek the story is the same. Find vegetation, wood, rocks or docks and do your thing.

UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: **1/2; mid 60s; clearing; 3.8 at Point of Rocks
After a lot of ups and downs the river is finally settling down and that’s good for you. The level still demands respect so small craft operators must be prudent because if you are going to be dumb—you better be tough.
Good Piedmont Area launch sites include Lander; Point of Rocks; Whites Ferry, Edwards Ferry and Seneca will put you in good areas where you will look for rocky clover near current breaks
It’s post-spawn now so the bass will “chase” and I suggest Case Magic Swims on RAB swim jig; Big Mouth Big Shakey; square bill cranks and of course—Campground tubes in the KP Series.
