A really good week with funky tides, mix of sun and clouds with just a hint of rain, then bunch of rain primarily in the afternoon—except Saturday, when the Northeaster moved in and dumped lots of wind swept rain-and air temperature. Between Friday and Saturday, there was 40 degree difference in high temp.
As promised, the full moon (Flower Moon) triggered a pretty good spawn, the third of the year but I worry that the “front” may cause nest abandonment.
TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: ***; clear with stain coming; mid-70s
Periods before, during and after full moons always affect fishing especially in tidal water and during spawn periods. This past week was very typical as water temperatures hovered in the mid-70s females deposited her eggs and the guys did their thing. There’s plenty to eat as the herring run is ongoing. Full moons cause extreme tidal flows too.
The Washington DC area isn’t “smoking;” yet but catch some smallmouth from bridge foundations and rip rap shore on Campground tubes or Whopper Ploppers and find some nice largemouth in Pentagon Lagoon and back end of the Washington Channel.
The Woodrow Wilson Bridge area remains consistent with plenty of bass in Penrod Cove, old barge graves, points and bays. You can’t beat the Case Magic Stik on a 3/0 hook on 8# mono. Belle Haven coves, nearby Broad Creek and Hog Island are good stops.
Piscataway to Pomonkey is a lot of water and a lot of stops bur well worth the effort. Big Mouth spinnerbaits and vibrating jigs are good choices. Greenway Flats, south shore wood in Pohick Bay and pads inside Pomonkey are suggested.
Occoquan to Aquiais red-hot so find grass with your Lowrance and stake out an area. Hard to beat Magic Stiks but Carolina rigged lizards are still great tools.
UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: *; high 70s; clear but coloring; 2.3 feet at Point of Rock and holding.
No great shakes but you can catch a few bass on tunes and Magic Swims by Case at most of the Piedmont region launch sites.
SUSQUEHANNA & JUNIATA RIVERS: **; high 70s, bit of color; 4.4 at Harrisburg with a bump to 5-feet by Tuesday.
You will have some more water later this week and that’s good for reaching areas that hold spinnerbait-eating smallmouth bass. It’s topwater time too guys so break out those whopper ploppers and Ricos. Add a Case Magic Swim to a Riverfront Campground swim jig to cover water and search-out post spawn bass.
Don’t forget that Johnny Cunningham of Riverfront Campground offers boat rentals and shuttle service. Reach Johnny at 717-877-2704.
