SUSQUEHANN & JUNIATA RIVERS, PA; ***; 58; clear; 5.1 at the Harrisburg gauge rising to 5-8 feet by Tuesday. 4.7 at Newport rising to 7.2 by Tuesday.
It’s Sunday morning as I write this report and the weather people are calling for rain today—and we really need some as the river is falling like a rock. Unusually warm weather so far has all river wildlife feeling frisky. The geese are fighting for turf; ducks are mating up; bass are claiming spawning sites and eagles are romancing. I.m most impressed with the health and shape of the 15-18 inch smallmouth—thick, wide and frisky. Better yet is the numbers of small bass we are catching.
B-Team is staking out their nesting sites and we are finding nice groups of bass rather than the one or twos of last week. 20-inch fish are scarce and we haven’t hooked a musky yet. Just about every lure you own will catch a bass these days but Campground Tubes, Case Magic Stiks, Zipperworms and Big Mouth Lure Company vibrating jig-Big Shakey are solid choices.
Most bass are in some current where Case Magic Swims and Rapala jerk baits shine.
UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: *1.2; 60ish; 5.0 at Point of Rocks rising to 8.8 by Tuesday
The river is in very nice shape but expect some rise and color this week. Smallmouth bass fishing is still difficult but better than last year. They are anxious to spawn so work the eddies but expect bites at the current seam.
There are fine launch options in the Piedmont including Brunswick, Lander, Point of Rocks, Whites Ferry, Edwards Ferry and Seneca. Invest in good equipment such as Ardent rods and reels and Bass Pro Excel monofilament—green, 8#.
Nothing beats a Campground tubes in the KP Series on an RAB jog head that you purchase from Johnny Cunningham of Riverfront Campground (717-877-2704.)
TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: ***; 60s; good color
Bass are anxious to spawn and conditions are near perfect so work the shallow grass flats and coves throughout. The Mattawoman and Woodrow Wilson Bridge area is the hottest but don’t neglect those tribs in between.
It’s hard to beat the Case Magic Stik and Big Shakey now but lipless crankbaits, tubes and Big Mouth spinnerbaits are deadly.
